Internet Acronyms


An acronym (from Greek: -acro = sharp, pointed; -onym = name) denotes a combination of letters (usually from an abbreviation) which can be used and pronounced as a word. 

Examples: radar = radio detecting and ranging / ASAP = as soon as posible
 

The term initialism uses a similar method, but the word is pronounced letter by letter.

Example: BBC British Broadcasting Corporation or USA United States of America.


And last but not least, there are symbols and/or units of reference, like min for minute or kg for kilogram.

Meet Karl Hyde, the voice and the songwriter behind the London based group Underworld.


The quality that has made Underworld so distinct on the British dance-music scene is that, unlike most dance bands, they write their own lyrics.

OK Karl, tell us how you write your songs.
These words are first-take a lot of the time. I fill notebooks with writing, I write every day. And I'll open up some pages in the notebook and I'll see these things, these words in front of me - and I go, 'Yeah, OK, this is this, I want to sing this'.

Where do you get the inspiration for your lyrics from, Karl?
For me, there is an inherent beauty in the city. I see the city as a very very beautiful place. Even the underside of it. There's a beauty even in the kind of... the forceful presentation of something. As long as it's meant with no malice or anger or violence, there's a beauty in its energy.

What is 'Born Slippy' - a dream? A dream come true? Or is it your view of reality?
In the simplest form, it's me walking through the streets of Soho trying to get back home to Romford in Essex. I was referring to myself reduced to a piece of meat, due to the fact that I'd drunk too much. The bigger story is that I'm fascinated by the kind of snapshots that one retains when you've had a couple of drinks. These kind of very precise snapshots one has of a little piece of street, or of a rubbish bin, or of a tape-recorder... I'm talking about being like a hoover, hoovering up all the images and the sounds and the smells of the city. Because after all it's cities that would inspire me.

What exactly does the word 'babe' mean here? Not 'a child', it seems...
What I'm referring to there is a kind of a male idea of a stereotype. This kind of like, 'Ah, babes, oh, she's a real babe' - meaning a kind of real derogatory term... For a woman, yeah. And that's not having a go at women. That's having a go at men.

Why did you choose to use the word 'boy' to describe a man - not 'chap' or 'lad'?
Because I think men are boys. Most of us haven't grown up, you know, most of us are still struggling with taking responsibility. It's like, 'I don't want responsibility tonight, tonight I want to lose control' ... And so, it's boy again.

In the song, the word lager gets repeated 16 times! Did you mean it to be a 'lager anthem'?
The lyrics are quite ironic. At first it was kind of upsetting that it was used like a 'lager anthem', which was the antithesis of the way it was written. It was a piece of irony.
The first time we played it live, people raised their lager cans and I was horrified because I was still deep into alcoholism. It was never meant to be a drinking anthem; it was a cry for help. Now I don't mind.
Why Born Slippy? It was a greyhound we won money on.

- According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Super Bowl Sunday is America's "second-largest food consumption day." (Only Thanksgiving Day beats it.)

- A persistent rumor says that sewage systems in major cities occasionally fail during Super Bowl halftimes, because a large volume of people supposedly all flush their toilets simultaneously. 
Don't worry! There's absolutely no evidence to support this claim.

- Phil Simms was paid $75,000 to shout "I'm going to Disney World” on the field moments after his Giants won Super Bowl XXI. 

Disney also paid Denver’s John Elway the same amount of money to yell the same thing—just in case his team won.

- The priciest tickets to Super Bowl I, which was played on January 15, 1967, cost $12. 
Adjusted for inflation, that's the equivalent of about $89 today. 
And even at that bargain price, the event still didn't sell out... 
If you're thinking about buying tickets for this year's event, you'd better be prepared to shell out (pay) at least $2300 per ticket (at press time). 

- The Super Bowl I halftime show consisted of two marching bands, acclaimed trumpeter Al Hirt, two men in jet packs, and 300 pigeons.

This was recorded May 31, 1969 at a "Bed-In" Lennon staged in room 1472 of Queen Elizabeth's Hotel in Montreal.
John and Yoko stayed in bed for eight days in an effort to promote world peace.
 
They got a great deal of media attention, which is exactly what they wanted to promote their cause.

Some of the people in the hotel room who sang on this were Tommy Smothers, Timothy Leary, Allen Ginsberg, and Petula Clark.

This was Lennon's first hit away from The Beatles.




Visitors to John and Yoko's bed-in, including reporters, staff, and celebrities, banged on everything from doors to tabletops for rhythm.

This song quickly became the anthem of the Vietnam antiwar movement.

BAGISM: Bagism involved literally wearing a bag over one's entire body.

According to John and Yoko, by living in a bag, a person could not be judged by others on the basis of skin colour, gender, hair length, attire, age, or any other such attributes.

Derek Taylor (1932–1997) was an English journalist, writer, publicist and record producer. He is best known for his role as press officer to The Beatles.

Norman Kingsley Mailer (1923–2007) was an American novelist, journalist, essayist, playwright, film-maker, actor, and liberal political activist.

Irwin Allen Ginsberg  (1926–1997) was an American poet, philosopher and writer. He is considered one of the leading figures of the Beat Generation during the 1950s and the counterculture that son followed.

"MLK Day" (Martin Luther King Jr. Day)

Martin Luther King Jr. Day (MLK Day) is an American Federal Holiday marking the day of his birthday. 

It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around King's birthday, January 15. 

Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1954 until his assassination in 1968. 

Born in Atlanta, King advanced civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience tactics, his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi inspired him.

Among many other things, King led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and he also helped organize the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his famous "I have a dream" speech.

In 1964 King won the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance.

In his final years, he expanded his opposition towards poverty and the Vietnam War.

He was investigated by the FBI, some high governmental authorities considered MLK dangerous and subversive.

In 1968 King was planning a national occupation of Washington D.C., to be called the "Poor People's Campaign", when he was assassinated on April 4 in Memphis, Tennessee.

His death was followed by riots in many U.S. cities.

The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. 

President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later. 

At first, some states resisted observing the holiday, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. 

It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000. 

BONUS TRACK: 

"Pride (In the Name of Love)" is a song by Irish rock band U2. The second track on the band's 1984 album, "The Unforgettable Fire", it was written about Martin Luther King Jr.

The song contains the erroneous reference to King's shooting as "Early morning, April 4," when it actually occurred after 6 p.m. 

Bono acknowledges the error and in live performances and he occasionally changes the lyric to "Early evening…"

BLUE MONDAY.... (How does it feel)

Blue Monday is a name given to a day in January (typically the third Monday of the month) reported to be the most depressing day of the year.

The concept was first published as part of a 2005 media campaign from holiday company Sky Travel which announced to have calculated the date using an equation.

The idea is considered pseudoscience.

Date:

The date generally falls on the third Monday in January, but also on the second or fourth Monday, or the Monday of the last full week of January.

Calculation:

The date was created to help a travel company to "analyze when people book holidays and holiday trends" and used many factors, including:

-weather conditions

-debt level (the difference between debt accumulated and our ability to pay)

-time since Christmas

-time since failing our new year’s resolutions

-low motivational levels...

-...and feeling of a need to take action. 

One equation used in 2006 was:

Tt = travel time; D = delays; C = time spent on cultural activities; R = time spent relaxing; ZZ = time spent sleeping; St = time spent in a state of stress; P = time spent packing; Pr = time spent in preparation. 

Units of measurement are not defined.

Some experts have observed that the equations "fail even to make mathematical sense", pointing out that under the original equation, packing for ten hours and preparing for 40 will always guarantee a good holiday, and that "you can have an infinitely good weekend by staying at home and cutting your travel time to zero".

Dean Burnett, a neuroscientist who has worked in the psychology department of Cardiff University, has described the work as "farcical", with "nonsensical measurements".

 

The Happiest day:

Also, in a press release by Wall's ice cream, it has been calculated the happiest day of the year—in 2005, 24 June, in 2006, 23 June, in 2008, 20 June, in 2009, 19 June, and in 2010, 18 June. 

So far, this date has fallen close to MIDSUMMER in the Northern Hemisphere (June 21 to 24).
